Apple still isn’t a huge supporter of generative AI, but it has finally used machine learning to improve autocorrect and provide built-in text suggestions in macOS Sonoma, iOS 17, and iPadOS 17. Now, when you type, Apple shows you: suggestions for what you might want to type next. These forecasts are displayed in gray and are often really good suggestions. When you see the prompt you want to tackle, you can press the spacebar and Apple will fill in the text.
However, if you can type quickly, you already know what you will be writing. In my experience, it’s quicker to type out the rest of the word or phrase I have in mind than to take a break from thinking and decide, so that Is what I wanted to type and operate the spacebar to go to the next word. If you’re like me and find this feature annoying, the good news is that you can easily turn it off.
How to turn off built-in text suggestions in macOS Sonoma
For some, built-in suggestions can assist you type faster on your iPhone keyboard. However, this does not translate into typing speed on a physical keyboard when using a Mac. Every app updated for macOS Sonoma turns on this feature by default, as do all of Apple’s first-party apps, so you’ll see it everywhere.
To disable this feature, go to System settings > Keyboard, then under Entering text header, click Edit button next Input sources option. In the pop-up menu, click the switch next to it Show inline predictive text and click Done button to save changes.
How to turn off built-in text suggestions in iOS 17
This feature is only available for iPhone 12 and newer versions as it uses the device’s intelligence to process and suggest text.
Apple apparently didn’t think this would bother iPhone users, so it didn’t think to add the toggle at launch. After listening to users, Apple will provide the option to turn off only inline text prediction, without turning off the entire text prediction system, When will iOS 17.2 come out?.
You can access it right now if you’re on the iOS 17.2 public beta. If not, you will have to disable the prediction feature completely. If you are using iOS 17.2, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Show predictions in text option. And if you don’t have iOS 17.2, you can disable it Prophetic feature in Keyboard settings to get the same results.
