Why did the Giants sign Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston this offseason?

To begin the offseason, the New York Giants only had one active QB on their roster. Syracuse’s Tommy DeVito’s former undrafted QB.

Late last week, the Giants were splattered into free agency. He signed veteran QB Jameis Winston into a two-year, $8 million deal. However, the Giants are making an unusual double dip by adding two veteran QBs to their roster. On Tuesday, NFL Insiders announced that New York had signed Russell Wilson. He has a one-year contract with $10.5 million guaranteed. What are the Giants’ plans for QB heading into the 2025 season?

Giants general manager Joe Shane and head coach Brian Daball are in hot seating. They finished 3-14 in 2024 and scored a #3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Many scouts and analysts around the league believe the Giants are planning to draft QB in the first round. However, these plans may have changed on Tuesday afternoon. New York has signed a one-year contract with former Steelers QB Russell Wilson.

The Giants were signed by Jamaice Winston and Russell Wilson for the 2025 season. This is a major upgrade to the QB room New York had during Daboll’s tenure as head coach. The NFL Insider said the Giants have signed Wilson to become the starting quarterback for next season. Wilson started 11th in Pittsburgh in 2024, making it 6-5. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Russell Wilson and Jamis Winston will meet the Giants’ needs in the 2025 QB. The team still needs to find a franchise QB. Will the Giants be able to use the #3 pick of 2025 to take the next QB in the future? After signing Russell Wilson and Jamis Winston, that would be an interesting decision. Most first-round rookie QBs start during their first season. It would be difficult for Giants rookies in 2025 to have Wilson and Winston on the roster. See how the Giants handle all this offseason.
