The New START treaty, the nuclear weapons agreement between the United States and Russia, is scheduled to expire next year. Signed in 2010, it sets caps on long-range weapons deployed and allows inspections by both sides to ensure compliance.
Without that, the two nuclear powers will face each other without binding ties for the first time in decades.
