At least two people were killed in a Russian drone attack Sunday in the Odesa region of southwestern Ukraine. According to local authorities, five trucks were set ablaze during the strike. Regional Governor Ole Kipel said three other people were injured.
Overnight through Sunday, Russia launched a total of 79 drones and two Iskander-M ballistic missiles toward Ukraine, of which 67 were shot down or intercepted, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure under attack
Meanwhile, Russia also launched drone and missile attacks in the Zaporizhzhya region overnight, injuring two people and leaving 60,000 people without power. Ukraine’s state energy utility Ukrenergo said several regions faced power outages on Sunday.
This is the latest attack as part of Russia’s ongoing campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter.
Ukrainian cities rely on centrally controlled public infrastructure for water, sewage, and heating systems, but power outages bring them to a standstill.
The attack is aimed at undermining Ukraine’s morale and disrupting weapons production and other war-related activities.
Recently, Russian attacks have become more effective. Moscow has launched hundreds of drones, some equipped with cameras that can improve targeting, especially in weakly defended areas, and overwhelm air defense systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also reported strikes in the Dnipro, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.
“This week alone, almost 1,500 attack drones, 1,170 guided air bombs, and more than 70 missiles of various types were used by the Russian military to attack lives in Ukraine,” he wrote.
“There was damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, as well as a number of terrorist attacks targeting the energy sector.”
Tuapse Port Fire
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces attacked the Russian port of Tuapse on Sunday night. Ukrainian intelligence officials told The Associated Press that the attack hit an oil tanker and loaded cargo into infrastructure and port buildings.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five drone strikes were recorded in operations carried out by the special forces of Ukraine’s Security Service and other defense forces.
According to Russian authorities, “two foreign civilian ships” were damaged.
The port is home to a major oil export terminal and a refinery owned by Russian oil company Rosneft, and has already been the subject of several attacks by Ukraine this year.
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian refineries, warehouses and pipelines in recent months to limit fuel supplies and disrupt military logistics.
