Ukraine plans to begin talks with the United States in the coming days on a 28-point peace plan jointly proposed by Russia and the United States, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Saturday that he has appointed a delegation to consult with the U.S. government on plans to halt Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“I signed the decree on the composition of the Ukrainian delegation and approved all relevant directives,” President Zelensky said in a video. He added: “Our representatives know exactly how to protect Ukraine’s national interests and what needs to be done to prevent a third Russian invasion, a new attack on Ukraine.”

Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said Ukraine is entering the latest stage of negotiations with the United States to “clearly understand” its national interests.

“Recently, we have begun discussions in Switzerland between senior Ukrainian and U.S. officials on the parameters of a possible future peace agreement,” Umerov wrote in a social media post on Facebook.

On Saturday, President Zelenskiy attended a ceremony in Kiev with his wife to commemorate the “Great Famine” that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin imposed on Ukraine in the early 1930s, killing millions. In a telegram message commemorating the anniversary of the Holodomor, President Zelenskiy struck a defiant tone: “Everyone knows how and why millions of our people died, starved to death, and millions were never born. And we are once again defending ourselves from Russia, which remains the same and is causing death again.”

night attack

Russia launched 104 drones in night attacks on Ukraine from Friday to Saturday, and also fired ballistic missiles from temporarily occupied Crimean territory.

According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, 89 of the drones were shot down or intercepted. However, six locations were attacked by drones and one by a missile.

One of the affected areas was the Odessa region, which borders Romania, and at least two people were injured, Ukrainian authorities said.

Earlier this week, a Russian attack hit two apartment blocks in the city of Ternopil, killing 26 people and injuring 93 others, the deadliest attack on the West since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
