US President Donald Trump is expected to sign a deadline this week to extend the deadline for Tiktok Chinese owners to sell from the widely used video sharing social media platform.
This is the third time Trump has extended the deadline.
The first case came from an inauguration order on January 20th, following a brief halt of the platform, when the ban approved by Congress and confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court came into effect.
In early April, Trump announced an order to extend Tiktok’s operations for another 75 days after a potential agreement to sell the app to American owners collapsed.
China has retreated from a deal the Trump administration repeatedly said was close to the finish line after Trump announced his global tariffs.
“As he has said many times, President Trump doesn’t want Tiktok to get dark,” White House press chief Karolyn Leavitt said in a statement.
“This expansion will last for 90 days, and the administration will work to ensure that this deal is closed.
Trump told reporters on Air Force 1 when he returned to Washington early Tuesday from Canada’s Seven or G7 Summit.
He also added that he believes his Chinese counterpart XI Jinping will “finally approve” the deal to sell Tiktok’s business in the US.
It is not clear how many times Trump can continue to extend the ban as the government continues in its efforts to negotiate transactions for sale of Tiktok, owned by Chinese company Bytedance.
Since joining Tiktok last year, Trump has gained over 15 million followers and has praised the platform for helping him gain popularity among younger voters. In January he said he had a “warm place in Tiktok.”
