Watch live: : Total solar eclipse in 2024
It is obvious that Monday’s solar eclipseduring which the passage of the Moon will carve out a path of total solar blockage from Texas to Maine will generate a lot of economic activity. Travel agencies offer promotionsand many companies try to exploit the astrological phenomenon to do this enhance sales of all kinds of items that have nothing to do with it.
But how much is all this worth to the economy?
This is estimated by one of the companies, Perryman Group the effects could amount to more than several billion dollars between direct tourist expenditure ($1.6 billion) and other additional consumption (as much as $6 billion).
“While the eclipse is a one-day event, many areas hope the influx of visitors from across the country and beyond will bring lasting benefits,” the company said. “Areas that rarely receive extensive national media coverage are likely to be covered, increasing prospects for future tourism as well as other development benefits.”
The Perryman Group says its estimation methodology relies on a survey system, industry information and other inputs that it uses to determine the extent to which various factors will lead to more or less economic activity. It sells such estimates to clients such as corporations and government groups.
The report also ranked so-called “totality path” countries according to how much economic impact they should expect from the eclipse. Texas is in first place (total impact of $1.4 billion), where the eclipse will begin to move across the United States. In last place is Fresh Hampshire ($2 million), where the eclipse will only last a miniature time along the northern end of the state before leaving the country.
