The mysterious AI chatbot, “gpt2-chatbot,” returned to the main enormous language model comparison site, LMSYS Org, on Monday evening, about a week after suddenly disappeared. But now there are two: “I’m-a-good-chatbot-gpt2” and “I’m-also-a-good-chatbot-gpt2”. These models demonstrated the same capabilities at the GPT-4 level, and some claimed they were even better than the original.
These models are even more elusive than the first gpt2 chatbot. Most AI models in LMSYS can be selected from a drop-down menu. However, the only way to access “im-a-good-gpt2-chatbot” and “im-also-good-gpt2-chatbot” is to go to LMSYS Chatbot Arena (battle). There you can type in a prompt and hope that one of the chatbots appears randomly. Despite the strange nature of these AI chatbots, they have once again attracted enormous attention from the AI community.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman he tweeted “im-a-good-gpt2-chatbot” on Sunday, a day before the chatbots came online, which many see as confirmation that OpenAI is A/B testing recent models. LMSYS Org typically only works with major AI model providers, offering anonymous testing services to many of them. Gizmodo couldn’t verify this, but that didn’t stop the online community from speculating wildly about what OpenAI was cooking up.
OpenAI and LMSYS Org did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.
On Reddit and X, users are trying to decipher Altman’s tweets, trends in previous OpenAI releases, and information from the gpt2 chatbot to decipher what will happen next. The the most popular theory the thing about these channels is that gpt2-chatbot is an aged AI model from OpenAI, enhanced with advanced architecture. That said, this is all speculation, and it’s still unclear whether these AI models even come from OpenAI.
Online communities were also impressed with the chatbot im-a-good-gpt2-chatbot and im-also-a-good-gpt2-chatbot. Like the original gpt2 chatbot, some claim that these AI models are superior to current versions of ChatGPT. One user claims that he was able to code the mobile game by simply asking “code Flappy Bird game in Python.”
According to reports, OpenAI has reportedly scheduled an on-site event for Thursday to showcase product demos and share updates information. However, the report shows that the company is currently considering postponing the event. The report did not indicate what this event was about.
Last week, speaking at Harvard University, Altman told the audience that the gpt2 chatbot was not GPT-4.5, according to report from Axios. However, Altman did not clarify whether it was an OpenAI product or not.
Gizmodo was able to employ “im-a-good-gpt2-chatbot” in the LMSYS battle arena. In our narrow testing, we found that the chatbot exhibited capabilities similar to GPT-4 and other AI models in its class. It answered some questions more thoroughly than the Meta Llama-3b-70b manual.
Still, there is little information about where these gpt2 chatbots come from. It seems clear that there is a powerful player behind them, and Altman clearly intends to fuel the fire, as online communities speculate that it is OpenAI. Either way, recent AI models are on the horizon, even if we don’t know what their origins are.
