Washington:
The United States announced a fresh tranche of military aid to Ukraine on Friday, including ammunition, rockets, mines and artillery shells, as Russia advances into the Kharkiv region.
Ukraine has been fighting again in Kharkiv since May 10, when thousands of Moscow’s troops stormed the border, making the biggest territorial advance in 18 months.
“The United States today announces a fresh, significant withdrawal of weapons and equipment to Ukraine to support the brave Ukrainian people in defending their country,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“This $275 million package, part of our effort to aid Ukraine resist the Russian attack near Kharkov, contains urgently needed capabilities.”
U.S. lawmakers last month passed a long-delayed $61 billion military aid deal for Kiev after months of bickering in Congress as Ukrainian forces suffered setbacks on the battlefield due to ammunition and funding shortages.
President Joe Biden has since ordered five tranches of military aid sent to Ukraine.
“Aid from previous packages has already arrived on the front lines, and we will move this fresh aid as quickly as possible,” Blinken said.
Local authorities said at least seven people were killed in Thursday’s strikes in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
According to local governor Oleg Synegubov, more than 11,000 people have been evacuated across the region since Russia launched its fresh offensive.
