In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars scored their fifth overall pick. But they did business with the Cleveland Browns and then with #2 Pick.

That choice led Jaguar to draft Travis Hunter, the winner of the Colorado Heisman Trophy. Hunter is a unique talent who plans to play both sides of the ball in the NFL. Jacksonville said he would start a hunter at WR at first. On Wednesday, Jaguar announced that he was releasing veteran WR Gabe Davis. No surprise after the team drafted Travis Hunter.

In his final offseason, the Jaguars later signed free agent WR Gabe Davis to a three-year, $39 million contract. Davis played 10 games for the Jaguar and caught 20 passes for 239 yards. https://t.co/rp0sjxtvs2 pic.twitter.com/v3bksthhty

The Buffalo Bills selected WR Gabe Davis in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He played the first four seasons of his career for the bill. Following the 2023 season, Buffalo has parted ways with several key players, including Davis. Prior to the 2024 season, Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jaguar. Davis played in 10 games and made nine starts in the jugs last season.

Davis tore Meniscus and missed the year against the Lions in Week 11. He finished with 20 catches and two touchdowns for 239 yards in his Jacksonville career. On Wednesday, the Jaguars released Gabe Davis after just one season. ESPN’s Mike Dirocco noted that the team will undertake a $20 million dead cap fee for the 2025 season. This is a number Jacksonville is willing to pay in a way that he says goodbye to Davis.

Gabe Davis had a $12.5 million deadline in 2025. It makes sense why Jags released Davis. Last season, Jacksonville chose WR Brian Thomas Jr. from LSU on his 23rd pick. Thomas Jr. exploded with 87 catches, 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. With the addition of Travis Hunter, it’s easy to see why Jags were ready to move on from Davis in Davis. In March, Jacksonville also released WR Christian Kirk, Teevan Engram and WR Josh Reynolds. Jag is moving in a different direction with his freshman head coach and GM.
