Since his 2024 campaign to retake the White House, President Donald Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of invoking the little-known Insurrection Act, which dates back to the early days of the American republic.
That law, the Insurrection Act of 1807, outlines the circumstances under which the president may send the National Guard or military into the country and provides some of the only exceptions to the limitations the law imposes on such actions.
