(Reuters) – The Financial Times has signed a licensing agreement with OpenAI to train artificial intelligence (AI) models based on assigned content, the newspaper said on Monday in the latest media deal for the Microsoft-backed startup.
The agreement will enhance OpenAI ChatGPT’s generative AI chatbot with assigned FT content, and the companies will collaborate to develop fresh AI products and features for FT readers.
The partnership also allows ChatGPT to utilize selected summaries, quotes and links to FT articles on the chatbot, the newspaper said in a statement, without disclosing the financial terms of the deal.
Last year, OpenAI struck a similar deal with the Associated Press in which the news publisher licensed part of its news archive to OpenAI.
ChatGPT, which launched the GenAI boom in behind schedule 2022, can mimic human conversation and perform tasks such as creating summaries of long text, writing poems, and even generating ideas for a themed party.
Some stores are already using generative AI in their content. BuzzFeed has said it will utilize artificial intelligence to run personality quizzes on its site, and the Novel York Times used ChatGPT to create a Valentine’s Day news generator last year.
