LONDON: Britain’s artificial intelligence (AI) security institute will open an office in the United States, hoping to raise international cooperation in regulating the rapidly developing technology.
Government officials said the institute’s modern San Francisco office would open this summer and employ a team of technical staff who would complement the organization’s work in London and strengthen ties with its U.S. counterpart.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
Some experts have warned that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity comparable to nuclear weapons or climate change, underscoring the need for greater international coordination in regulating the technology.
The institute’s announcement comes days before the second global AI security summit, which will be co-hosted in Seoul this week by the British and South Korean governments.
