Hello friends! Welcome to Installer No. 36, Your Guide to the Best and Edge-The worst thing in the world. (If you’re novel here, welcome, glad you found us, Installerverse loves you and you can also read all the aged issues on the site Installer Home.)
I missed you all last week! I was at a friend’s bachelor party in South Carolina, playing golf and eating burgers while mostly staying offline. Thank you to everyone who contacted us to say you missed the newsletter! But now I’m back and that’s how it is Installer. We are So back. This week I was writing AI gadgets AND iPadswatching Little reindeer AND Autumn guyreading Drink before the warand listening to great ones Challengers result.
I also have a novel browser for Windows, some novel mobile audio options, some fun things to watch this weekend, coffee nut apps, and more. Let’s dive in.
- Bow for Windows. Arc is still my favorite browser, and even in this first version it works surprisingly well on Windows. (Though it lacks some of Arc’s more advanced features and some AI elements). If you try it, give it time – it’s a really substantial change from Chrome, but I still like it. (The iOS app also received some substantial and much-needed updates this week.)
- Klaudiusz for iOS. I’m sure there’s a good ranking of which AI model is good for which purposes, but I’m mostly leaning towards which app is the prettiest? The novel one from Anthropic is nice: neat, elementary and certainly faster than the web app. me too Really like an icon.
- “No CGI is actually unseen CGI.” The fourth and final part of a really frosty series about CGI, hosted on the great YouTube channel Rabbit Hole. Through these films, I learned a lot about filmmaking and the good and bad tricks filmmakers apply.
- Sofa 4.0. A huge update to one of my favorite movie/book/show trackers. The sofa now allows you to collect and organize everything, however you want – MacStories he’s on a great streak of all the things you can do, and I’m already using it to plan summer trips.
- Bose SoundLink Max. $399 is a steep price for a Bluetooth speaker, but I really like this one. Very long battery life; AUX port; entertaining little handle; probably perfect sound. I was Wonderful UE Tree I have believed for years, but I will try this one this summer.
- Beata Solo 4. I agree with Chris Welch that it’s weird that these headphones don’t have ANC. But I still like the look of them, love how lightweight they are, and am excited about the corded options.
- Hacks season 3. I’m tardy to this show about the lives and relationships of two comedians, but it’s entertaining and weird and extremely worth your time. Only 18 episodes to catch up! You can do it this weekend!
- An idea for you. I’m currently skeptical of Anne Hathaway because I just found out that she’s also an Arsenal fan, which makes her frosty, intelligent and wonderful. But I keep hearing good things about this Netflix movie about contemporary life, fame, and the weirdness of both.
- “Phone apps for (weird) coffee lovers.” James Hoffmann is a must-subscribe to all things coffee, but I particularly like this look for all the apps for coffee drinkers. I became huge Filter especially a fan, and my coffee-making process is now more complicated than ever. Love it.
Riley Testut he’s had a busy few weeks. A few months, actually. Years, honestly. He is the developer Delta, the gaming emulator that has taken over the App Store over the past few weeks and may also signal a whole novel era of apps. He has been working on making his AltStore PAL app store available to users in the EU, while also trying to get some Pokémon Play in.
I asked Riley to share his home screen, partly to see if I could see his Delta and ROM configurations. I have my wish! Here’s Riley’s home screen and information about the apps he uses and why:
Telephone: Purple iPhone 12 Mini. I absolutely LOVE this phone and I’m afraid I’ll eventually have to upgrade to a larger one. (I would get the 13 Mini if it weren’t for the fact that it doesn’t come in purple.)
Wallpaper: Photo A Pokémon Mew-shaped drone show, originally done by Joe Merrick (of Serebii fame), then slightly edited.
Apps: Phone, FaceTime, Photos, Camera, Notes, Maps, Calculator, Find My, Files, Pokémon DreamSettings, 1Password, Alamo Drafthouse, Messages, Mail, Safari.
My co-founder/roommate Shane and I are obsessed with this Pokémon Dream (we compete to see who gets the most shine) so we deserve to be front and center. My social folder contains my most used apps (Ivory and Threads) and below is the Alamo Drafthouse app which I apply A LOT as I love going to the movies and have an annual pass ¯_(ツ)_/ ¯
1Password contains literally everything critical in my life, so it’s also a staple, but I only created the Delta folder recently when it was released in the App Store. It contains the application itself as well as launchers Pokémon Emerald AND Pokémon HeartGold and the amazing Ketchup pokédex app so I can easily search Pokémon statistics.
And since I can’t apply AltStore PAL outside the EU, I have a regular AltStore widget that reminds me to refresh the app every week!
I also asked Riley to share some of the things he’s currently interested in. Here’s what he shared:
- I bought myself A Steam deck a few months ago and I loved it! In fact, this is the main way I kept myself entertained while we were stuck in Europe trying to get AltStore PAL up and running (God bless the Dolphin emulator and Super Mario Galaxy 2).
- I also have a weakness for super nerdy science videos on YouTube and History of the Universe Channel is literally the perfect thing to have in the background while I’m building Legos or something. I also recently discovered it Technological connections‘ which basically scratches the same itch, but for technology. I too will remain a fan forever Nirvanna band showand Shane and I love themUpdate day” so much so that we even used it to announce the launch of AltStore PAL.
- At the same time… I am also deeply engaged in the ongoing UFO discourse. It’s stimulating that Congress and others are taking seriously something that has been dismissed for so long, because that’s how science progresses!
