Seoul: SK Group president Chey Tae-won met with CC Wei, president of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) in Taiwan, and they discussed strengthening cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) chip technology, SK Group said on Friday.
The SK Group has under its wing SK hynix, the second largest manufacturer of memory chips in the world. Chey and Wei agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two companies in the field of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, group officials said, Yonhap news agency reported.
“Let’s lay the foundation for the era of artificial intelligence together to benefit humanity,” Chey Wei said, according to a statement issued by SK Group.
The meeting came about a month and a half after SK hynix signed a strategic partnership with TSMC as part of an effort to expand its capacity to produce premium HBM chips and advanced packaging technologies.
As part of the partnership, SK hynix plans to leverage TSMC technologies in the development of sixth-generation HBM4 chips, which are expected to enter mass production in 2025.
Both companies also plan to join forces to optimize the integration of the packaging process, CoWoS technology.
HBM chips, integral components used for AI computing, are becoming increasingly popular with the development of applications such as generative artificial intelligence, as exemplified by models such as ChatGPT.
SK hynix supplies fourth-generation HBM3 chips to global AI chip giant Nvidia, which has a monopoly status in the market.
SK hynix is a key customer of Nvidia Corp., a major player in the AI semiconductor market, supplying almost exclusively fourth-generation HBM3 chips.
