NEW DELHI: Key innings from Jonny Bairstow AND Rilee Rossouw secured Punjab Kings a comfortable seven-wicket win against defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the IPL on Wednesday.
Chasing a target of 163, Punjab Kings chased down Bairstow’s 46 and Rossouw’s 43 and reached the target with 13 balls to spare at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
England international Bairstow continued his good form from the previous match where he scored an unbeaten 108 as Punjab broke an IPL record of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
Bairstow and Rossouw, South Africa’s left-handed batsman, stitched a 64-run stand for the second wicket to start a successful chase.
Following the Punjab Kings victory, Rossouw revealed the plans he had set with Bairstow against the Yellow Brigade.
“I have to give credit to the bowlers, 160 was up for grabs on that wicket. We hope that the way Jonny played today will reinforce that form and give us the basis to pursue him,” Rossouw said after the match.
“[On plans when he was out there with Bairstow] Seeing the ball and hitting it, there’s really no question about how much we need, I’m just saying it straight. [on his dismissal] Unfortunate. It was one of those things, so focusing on hitting the ball and one of those things, I missed something. It’s never over until it’s over, we still have faith in the locker room, we will focus on our game and not on others. I hope everything will work out,” Rossouw added.
Five-time winners CSK, who have won five and lost five matches so far in the tournament, are fourth in the 10-team table, led by Rajasthan Royals.
Punjab Kings are currently seventh in the table. After 4 wins in 10 matches, Punjab Kings have 8 points.
