A preliminary 5.2 magnitude earthquake just south of Julian in East San Diego County struck local time today at 10:08am on Monday, April 14th.
According to US Geological Survey (USGS)The epicenter of the earthquake was 2.5 miles south of Julian, with tremors recorded as north as Escondido and Mexicali’s Far East. The earthquake reduced tremors of 3.5 magnitude in the same area on Sunday afternoon.
Seismicologist Dr. Lucy JonesI’ll talk CNNconfirmed that the event was “highly likely to be associated with the Elsinore Fault,” a branch of the broader San Andreas System. She adds, “All earthquakes can be prophecies of something bigger,” explaining there is about a 5% chance that follow-up trembling is strong.
National Weather Service We have confirmed that a tsunami is not expected. However, aftershocks came quickly and in a row, with at least seven reported by 10:30am. The strongest of these was the magnitude 3.0 recorded immediately after the main earthquake.
No major injuries have been reported, but the psychological and physical effects are noteworthy. According to NBC 7 San Diegocar alarms echoing through Carney Mesa’s parking garage, showing where construction workers had fled.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said in X: “We have been in touch with local, state and federal officials who have not known any visible or significant damage to the city so far. Please report damage to our community.”
Locals in the San Diego area shook
The earthquake left a particularly strong impression on Julian residents. “Everyone was checking each other and all the cars had alarms gone,” Julian Chamber of Commerce Robin Boland told CBS News Los Angeles. In Carlsbad, a woman named Caroline described it as “a very violent shock… our entire building was shaking… that was the biggest earthquake I’ve felt for a long time.”
“I just sound like three or four different bursts and a different bottle of pop,” Dylan Carniero, who works at Julian’s Mountain Spirits Liqueur, told CBS.
Elsewhere in Ramona, Ashley Pinnick said, “It felt like my whole roof was falling apart.”
Preliminary earthquake: wider warnings on the west coast?
The earthquake depth is estimated to be approximately 8 miles (13 kilometers). Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed he had been briefed, adding that California is “coordinating with local governments to assess the damages and checking if emergency response is necessary.” CNN.
More than 25 million people reportedly experienced some degree of shaking, with the USGS describing it as “moderate” near the epicenter.
