On Friday, Russia temporarily cut off about 2% of global oil supplies after Ukraine attacked one of its main facilities in the port city of Novorossiysk in the southwestern Krasnodar region, according to multiple Russian officials and Telegraph news agencies.

Officials said the attack struck and caused a fire at the Shesh Haris oil terminal, which serves as the terminus for the pipeline. The accident caused a large-scale fire at the site, but the fire has now been extinguished and exports of 2.2 million barrels per day have been suspended, Reuters reported, citing industry sources.

Novorossiysk serves as a key hub for Russia’s Black Sea logistics and energy infrastructure and has been a repeated target of Ukrainian attacks.

Russian oil refineries and petrochemical facilities are considered legitimate military targets for Kiev, as they help finance Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The Krasnodar Region Operational Headquarters reported that an oil terminal was attacked and several coastal facilities were damaged.

According to local media RIA Novosti, a civilian ship moored in the port was attacked in the group’s attack, injuring three crew members.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Combating Disinformation, commented on the incident on social media. “This is the Novorossiysk oil terminal after the strike,” he wrote on Telegram. “Meanwhile, Russia is taking a hit on residential buildings and energy infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on social media

The latest attack on Novorossiysk comes as Russia fired waves of drones and missiles into Kiev in a massive nighttime attack that left at least six people dead, 14 injured and several apartment buildings set on fire.
