Bollywood couple Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal are expecting their first child together. The duo is elated because their debut production “Girls Will Be Girls” will be shown as part of Cannes Écrans Juniors during the 2024 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The side section is a selection of eight international films that are of particular interest to juvenile people over 13 years of age, introducing them to a variety of topics, cultures and film art.
“Girls Will Be Girls” directed by Shuchi Talati will be shown during the film gala on May 22 and 23 at the Alexandre III Theater and on May 24 at Raimu Hal’. According to the creators, the film takes place in a boarding school in a compact hill town in the Himalayas in northern India. It tells the story of the journey of Mira, a 16-year-old girl whose rebellious awakening is intertwined with her mother’s unfulfilled experiences while growing up. It consists of Preeti Panagrahi, Kani Kusruti, Jitin Gulati, Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy Kiron.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is an India-French co-production, a collaboration between Chadha and Fazal’s banner, Pushing Buttons Studios, Blink Digital, Crawling Angel Films and Dolce Vita Films. “Producing this film was a labor of love, and seeing how it resonated with audiences around the world is incredibly rewarding.
We believe in the power of stories that challenge and inspire, and Girls Will Be Girls does just that. It’s a film that speaks to the complexities of growing up, and we can’t wait for Cannes audiences to experience it,” Richa Chadha said in a statement. Ali Fazal said that the team knew from the very beginning that “Girls Will Be Girls” was a special project. “Shuchi Talati created a attractive, moving story that deserves this platform. We are proud to be part of a film that not only entertains, but also initiates significant conversations. This is just the beginning and we can’t wait for what’s to come.”
“Girls Will Be Girls” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where it won two awards – the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award and the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting for Panagrahi. The film later screened at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. Other films that will be shown as part of the Cannes Ecrans Juniors selection include: “The Child Who Measured the World”, “The Trip”, “The Monk and the Gun”, “Another Son”, “Valentine’s Day”, “Sweet as” and “Teenage hearts”.
