Rahul Dravid’s illustrious career as coach of the Indian cricket team is coming to an end as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to release nominations for the post in the next few days. For Rahul Dravid, this was his second season as Team India coach as his contract was extended after the 2023 ODI World Cup and expires after the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. While coaching a forceful team like India is a coveted position, the BCCI’s task of finding a up-to-date coach for the Rohit Sharma-led team will be a challenge.
According to the report by Times of Hindustan, BCCI’s recent attempts to search for a up-to-date head coach have not gone so well as reputed coaches shy away from devoting ten months of the year to the national team. Additionally, BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified that the board is seeking a long-term contract.
“We are looking for a long-term coach, for three years,” he said on Thursday during a conversation with selected media.
BCCI vetted candidates for the head coach position share similar views that the role of coach in all formats in the national team is too demanding. The additional options offered by linking up with IPL franchises and other leagues around the world make the role of national team coach less lucrative.
What about Split Coaching?
Over the next three years, Team India will face some of the biggest tournaments in the world across all three formats of the game. So far, the BCCI has shown openness to the idea of split coaching to manage workload, but secretary Jay Shah does not seem to be convinced about the idea.
“There is no precedent in Indian cricket for different coaches to play different formats. Apart from that, we have a lot of players who play in all formats. Ultimately, this is the call of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). I have to implement what they decide,” he said.
Split Coaching will require hiring multiple coaches for different formats of the game.
