Protesters have taken them to the streets of the capital New Delhi and several other cities in India after the attacks in India-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday.
Police called the incident a “terrorist attack” and denounced extremists fighting India’s rule.
The senior minister and Indian officials have yet to provide details of Tuesday’s attack, but the majority of Indian media and political commentators quickly denounced Pakistan without citing any evidence.
Also on Wednesday, India closed its major border crossing with Pakistan, halted its water-sharing treaties and downgraded diplomatic relations with its neighbors.
Pakistan denies involvement in the attack. “We are concerned about the loss of the lives of tourists,” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement while hoping for a quick recovery for the injured.
Officials said the 24 people killed were Indian tourists, one from Nepal, and one from local tourist guides.
At least 17 people were injured in the incident. This was one of the deadliest attacks of many years in the Himalayas claimed by both India and Pakistan.
The Kashmir Resistance, a previously unknown extremist group, has argued responsibility for attacks on social media.
The group claimed that authorities had settled more than 85,000 “outsiders” in the area, and that the people targeted on Tuesday were not “regular tourists” but “linked and affiliated with Indian security agencies.”
Group messages could not be validated independently.
