The dominant theme of this week’s news seems to be thrill and suspense. We are transported to the Regency era, the world of superheroes, a crime scene and a bizarre case of mass suicide. The biggest premieres include season 4 of Prime Video’s “The Boys” – featuring a group of high-profile vigilantes trying to hunt down corrupt superheroes – and season 3 of Netflix’s Bridgerton Part 2, which sees elites embroiled in complicated love triangles and gossip.
Among the Indian originals, JioCinema showed the thrilling murder mystery Gaanth: Chapter 1 which makes you think about social psychosis. Next up is the somewhat similar Apple TV drama Presumed Innocent, in which a prosecutor offers to charge him with the murder of his colleague.
If you are in the mood for something lighthearted, you can opt for Do aur Do Pyaar on Hotstar which revolves around loveless marriages, extra-marital affairs and romantic dramas with an overall comedy tinge. Another alternative is Zee5’s Luv Ki Arrange Marriage, in which single parents of a potential arranged couple fall in love with each other.
However, if you don’t prefer anything in the romance or thriller genre, there’s a novel uplifting show on Amazon miniTV this week called Sisterhood that’s worth watching. The action takes place in a convent school for girls and focuses on a group of four girls: studious Zoya (Anvesha Vij), mischievous Nikita (Nitya Mathur), tardy learner Ann (Bhagyashree Limaye) and wild Gargee (Nidhi Bhanushali). The show serves up gallops of nostalgia and will probably make you smile more than once. But don’t expect a very deep dive into the complexities of human emotion.
