Some people behind the wheel today’s artificial intelligence boom are given another responsibility – this time to ensure the sheltered deployment of units to the U.S. government artificial intelligence in critical infrastructure.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman AND Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are among nearly two dozen technology and business leaders joining the novel Artificial Intelligence Security and Protection Council, which will advise the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on protecting the economy, healthcare and other industries from the threats posed by artificial intelligence– reports “The Wall Street Journal”. They will work with the department to make recommendations on how to prevent potential harm from the operate of artificial intelligence in critical infrastructure, including the power grid and transportation.
Other technology leaders on the novel board include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, as well as Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian, The Journal reports. Academics and civil rights leaders will also serve on the board.
“Failure to deploy artificial intelligence in a sheltered and responsible manner across critical infrastructure could be devastating,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who will chair the council, told The Journal. He also said that implementing artificial intelligence technology in U.S. infrastructure is a “huge opportunity” to improve services in ways that include production automation and the ability to find problems in the power grid.
The Biden administration issued an executive order in October Executive Order on Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, who appointed a novel management board. The executive order also requires AI developers such as OpenAI and Microsoft to disclose security test results and other information to the federal government before making models public. A DHS official told The Journal the board will hold its first meeting in May and is expected to meet quarterly.
