Gaza suffered the most deadly day for donors in Sunday’s war of more than 21 months, with at least 85 Palestinians killed while trying to reach food, local health officials said.
The reported deaths come when Israeli forces issue evacuation orders to parts of Central Gaza. It is one of the few regions that are rarely operated on the ground, and is based by many international aid organizations.
One aid group said some of the offices were told to evacuate immediately.
The highest death toll has been reported in northern Gaza, and the situation is particularly desperate. At least 70 Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach aid through the crossing Jikims with Israel, Gaza Health records director Zahel al-Waheidi said.
The UN World Food Programme said 25 trucks were in aided for the “hunger community” when they encountered a large crowd.
“All of a sudden, a tank surrounded us, gunfire and strikes trapped us as it rained. We were locked up for about two hours,” he said, saying he had been waiting for flour and hadn’t eaten bread in 15 days.
“I will never object. Let us die on hunger, it’s better.”
The injured Nafiz Al-Najjar said he saw the tanks and drones “randomly” targeting people, and his cousins and others being shot and killed.
Israeli forces say thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza shot a gathering of thousands of Palestinians that pose a threat, and it knew some of the victims.
The figures reported by Gaza officials were much higher than the first investigation that was found to have caused confusion and was accused of.
