Nicola Coughlan reveals the prank she pulled Bridgerton co-star Luke Newton after learning he was once a member of a boy band.
During a recent interview with People magazinethe actress who plays Penelope Featherington was asked about her favorite behind-the-scenes moments during filming, to which she replied, “We had a great time at one of the balls where Luke had to come and interrupt the dancing.”
She continued: “I found out a few years earlier that Luke was in a boy band and I thought it was the best thing ever. For years I’ve wanted to do this prank on him when he comes to dance and instead of the performance music it will be his song from his boy band, but it took so much planning it was crazy. “
In a joint interview, Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, chimed in, describing the moment as “awesome,” while Coughlan recalls being “really nervous” when the joke started.
“I remember we knew which shot it was going to be in, the cameras were positioned to be on it, but it was so cute because you would get on the dance floor and stop the dance and then we stood together to start dancing and then you went your way little face,” she explained to Newton, showing a confused expression. “Yes, it was all filmed, so I didn’t see it in its entirety. I’ve only seen a little bit of the past, but I’m really excited to watch it.”
Newton added that he suspected something was going on because he felt a change in energy in the room moments before the prank.
“It was so weird because I felt this strange energy,” he said. “I felt like people were looking over my shoulder and I thought: Are people nervous that I dance? Since I’m fine, we’ll manage.”
The actor continued: “And suddenly I hear it, because first the song came into my ear, just tick, tick, tick and I thought: this really sounds like… And then it started thundering. the speakers and all the dancers…” Coughlan added: “All the dancers started dancing, everyone was cheering.”
Although the joke went as well as Coughlan had hoped, she admitted that she had “never been more nervous on set, even during a sex scene. I thought to myself that if something went wrong…
However, they both agree that a particular dance scene on the hit Netflix show will “always remind them” of the joke.
