Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni are some of the names used by phony job candidates head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has accepted over 3,000 candidates for the position, but according to The Indian Express, most of them come from phony names, including former cricketers and politicians.
As the deadline for submitting applications for the post was on Monday (May 27), it is understood that the BCCI received a number of applications whose names included Tendulkar, Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and other former cricketers. The long list also includes the names of politicians like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On May 13, BCCI invited applications for the post through Google forms and witnessed a vast number of phony applicants for the post on a daily basis.

At this stage, it is not clear whether the BCCI has received any applications from genuine candidates interested in this responsibility.
This is not the first time that the Indian board has dealt with phony candidates, which has cost it a lot of time to vet them. In 2022, when the BCCI invited applications for the post of head coach, it received around 5,000 applications from fraudsters using the names of stars. While BCCI had then asked interested candidates to send their applications through post, this time it used Google forms.
“Last year too, the BCCI received such a response in which fraudsters came forward and this time the story is similar. The reason why BCCI had to invite applications through Google forms is because it is effortless to check the names of candidates on one sheet,” said a BCCI official.
In its announcement, the board outlined the qualities it expects from the team’s head coach who will serve until the 2027 Over-50 World Cup in South Africa.
Here are some of the most notable requirements for a novel head coach listed by the BCCI: The candidate “must be willing to cope with the professional expectations and pressures of handling marquee athletes”; they should also aid “develop a world-class Indian cricket team that delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with its approach to the game.”
The next head coach will begin his tenure shortly after next month’s T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean. Incumbent Rahul Dravid, whose term began in December 2021, has decided not to seek an extension.
