Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has officially launched the American Party The Americas, which promises to represent what he calls “80%” of political scope. The announcement, made on July 5th via his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), marks one of the most important outsider entries into American politics in recent history.
The formation of the American Party follows the growing rift between both Musk and major US political parties. Musk had previously donated to both candidates, but his recent drop-off with former President Donald Trump appears to have supported him through Super PAC in 2024.
In a series of posts, Musk criticized the current political system for being controlled by what he calls a “corrupted university” made up of both Democrats and Republicans. He argues that the American Party offers an alternative focused on transparency, economic growth and protection of civil liberties. In particular, it concerns freedom of speech, digital rights, and freedom of innovation. “I chose two less evil,” Musk wrote in a pinned post. “The American Party is not for political theatres, but for those who want actual progress.” His call for action came after an online vote for the virus, where he gained overwhelming support for the formation of a new political system. The early message from the party suggests a platform rooted in libertarian-leaning ideals, focusing on decentralization, business policy, and less federal interference.
At least initially, Musk’s teams say that rather than seeking presidency, the party’s short-term goal is to win some important parliamentary seats in the middle of 2026. With billions at his disposal, political analysts say Musk could be set up on his own to disrupt the US political landscape, especially given his large online follow-up and control over his influential platform. However, skeptics warn that third-party efforts in the US face sudden institutional hurdles, such as the voting access law and the “all winners” electoral systems that tend to alienate non-major parties.
Musk’s destruction with Musk came into public following a dispute over a fierce tax and spending bill that Musk called it “financial madness” and opposed. Trump’s allies launched a political counterattack, including a new super PAC designed to neutralize the influence of masks. Despite criticism from both parties, the Musk move has already sparked a passionate response, especially from some sectors of the masses, where young and independent voters are disillusioned with the status quo.
The American Party is still in its early stages, but its launch has already sparked intense political debate. Whether it could translate digital popularity into successful elections remains to be seen. But one thing is clear. Elon Musk wants to not only shape the future of cars, rockets and AI, but also reshape the future of American democracy.
