The Murcia region has emerged as a major state in the export of spices, contributing a prominent 72.5% to the total country’s exports in 2022. The region experienced a significant increase in overseas sales, witnessing growth of over 20% year-on-year. This positive trend continues into the first eight months of 2023, with an additional 6.7% increase in exports compared to the same period in 2022.
Murcien Spice’s Global Reach
Approximately 100 spice companies from the region are actively participating in foreign markets, with major export destinations such as the US, Germany, France, the UK and the Netherlands. Critical to this success are bestselling spices such as peppers and paprika, ginger, saffron and turmeric.
La Pastra: Pioneering Innovation
Joaquín Gómez, director of the Development Institute (INFO), highlighted the achievement when he visited La Pastora, Murcia’s famous paprika company. Founded in 1945, La Pastora is not only a pioneer in the spice industry, but also introduced unique products such as paprika pearls and two variations of extra virgin olive oil infused with spicy, smoky paprika. The success of companies like La Pastora illustrates Murcia’s commitment to combining tradition with innovation at the global spice stage.
