MMM Film Sales acquires Stroma Cairns’ Toronto premiere ‘The Son And The Sea’

Exclusive: British filmmaker Stroma Cairns feature debut, My son and the sea, It was picked up for international sales through Paris-based MMM Film Sales ahead of its world premiere at Toronto’s Discovery Strand.

The film will premiere in Europe at the new Directors section of the San Sebastian Film Festival later this month, and will be performing in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Jonah follows two young men, Jonah and Lee, as she sets out on a trip to the Scottish coast, but Jonah tries to escape the troublesome life in London. Upon arrival, they meet a young deaf person struggling with the fallout of the actions of his twin brothers. This opportunity deepens into transformative connections as the three men navigate the meaning of growing up.

Cairns brother Jonah West will star alongside his real-life best friends Stanley Brock and Connor Tompkins. Many of the cast are deaf and are first-time actors, with Cairns casting directly from the people of her life. The film was filmed at a village location in Penang.

My son and the sea It is produced by the UK of Studio Croy’s company based in New York. It was developed with BBC Film, loaned by BBC Film and funded with Moment Film Group and Creativity Capital.

In The Company is a family-driven production company founded by mother-daughter duo Imogen West and Cairns.

Studio Cloy was founded by former Netflix executive Kelly Peck and has executive producer credits A brutal person and The last swimming.

“The biggest challenge with this film was the personal journey I had to continue,” Cairns said. “Because the theme is so personal to me, I felt reluctant to go on that journey. But now, I have made a very special film with this film and my co-writer and the incredible collaborator and storyteller Imogen West.

“I hope that the audience will feel elated and leave knowing that connection is important to each other and important to themselves,” Cairns said.

“Cairns captures young masculinity with nuance and empathy, delving into the emotional undercurrents of intimacy, vulnerability and vulnerability,” the MMM Film Sales team said. “The film unfolds with quiet authenticity, finding beauty in unlikely places, offering a deep quest for self-awareness and connection. It is a bold, poetic story that resonates deeply with the audience, and is sure to have a lasting impact on both beyond the festival circuit.”
