CEOs from tech giants including Microsoft, Google, ChatGPT developer OpenAI, among others, are joining a recent U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) advisory board that was created to advise the government on the protected development of artificial intelligence (AI).
In addition to the 22 board members, which include CEOs of major technology companies and academics, the board also includes politicians such as the governor of Maryland.
The recent advisory council will support authorities combat AI-related disruptions that could “impact national or economic security, public health, or safety,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.
“The board will support DHS stay ahead of evolving threats posed by adversarial nation-state actors and strengthen our national security,” the statement said.
Who are the AI board members? In addition to Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai and other leaders in artificial intelligence and technology, other influential members appointed to the board include the CEOs of Adobe, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Cisco , IBM, Nvidia, Delta Airlines and Northrop Grumman.
“Artificial intelligence is the most transformative technology of our time, and we must ensure it is deployed safely and responsibly,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement.
The council is scheduled to meet for the first time in early May and make recommendations for the protected adoption of artificial intelligence “in the imperative services Americans rely on every day.”
Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of homeland security and chairman of the board, said embedding artificial intelligence technology in the nation’s imperative facilities brings benefits to Americans’ everyday lives, but also carries significant risks.
“Failure to deploy AI in a protected and responsible manner across critical infrastructure could have disastrous consequences,” Mayorkas said.
