Mercadona is expanding in Portugal, offering hundreds of new jobs, with some pay reaching nearly 4,900 euros a month.
The Spanish supermarket giant has also unveiled a logistics hub worth 290 million euros and continues to open new stores nationwide.
High wage legal employment provided in Mercadona, Portugal
According to the NIT, the highest vacancies currently advertised by Mercadona include labor lawyers. The role offers permanent contracts, total amounts ranging from 45,637 euros to 69,280 euros to 69,280 euros, as well as allowances and annual bonuses.
Other positions available include financial analysts, cash flow managers, refrigeration technicians and maintenance assistants. All vacant seats are listed on Mercadona Portugal’s LinkedIn page.
Matosinhos’ new Mercado Supermarket in October this year
Mercado opened its latest Portuguese store on October 9th, at Jens in Matosinhos at 3867 Street in San Gens, with a sales area of 1,900m². The Food Retail Report states that the opening will produce 65 permanent local jobs.
The new brunch will have a wide corridor and a regular Mercadona section of fish shops, bakeries, butchers, fruits, vegetables and ready-to-eat meals. The chain emphasizes the inclusion of energy-saving systems and collaborative tools for employees.
Mercado already operates supermarkets in Lisbon, Porto, Lures, Penafiel, Fafe, Leiria and Palmera, with plans to eventually reach 70 stores nationwide.
Almeirim’s 290 million euro Mercado Logistics Center
In addition to opening the store, Mercadona has launched its largest logistics centre to date with Almeirim, representing an investment of 290 million euros. The 120,000m² facility, which began construction in 2022, serves all 63 Mercadona stores currently operating in Portugal.
The Logistics Hub has created 630 permanent jobs and 7.2 million euros have been invested in training for new hires. According to an official Mercadona statement, the centre will be equipped with 8,700 solar panels that provide 25% of the energy, a water reuse system that saves 90,000 liters of daily life, and a stormwater collection system to protect local ecosystems.
Portuguese Finance Minister Manuel Castro Almeida praised the project during his recent visit, saying, “Such investments are welcome as they allow modernisation of the national economy and in this case creates added value for the Almeirim region.”
Meanwhile, Almeirim Mayor Pedro Miguel Ribeiro called it a “historic day for our municipality,” adding, “Mercadona is currently the largest employer of the municipality.”
Mercadona’s rapid expansion is creating stable jobs and strengthening the supply chain, but it also raises questions. Could foreign-owned chains that dominate the Portuguese market be viewed as a success story in the community or as a threat to small retailers struggling to compete?
