French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Bridget Macron have filed a 22-count defamation lawsuit in Delaware against right-wing commentator and author Candice Owens.
The couple accused Owens of running a false, year-long, false campaign aimed at personal and financial benefits.
The lawsuit includes charges of honor, false light and fam humiliation, and seeks punitive and actual damages from Owens and her business entity.
Who is Candice Owens?
Owens, a well-known conservative influencer with over 5.5 million Instagram followers and 4 million YouTube subscribers, has repeatedly claimed Brigitte Macron is a man. In the X-Post in January 2024, Owens wrote:
She expanded these allegations in a multi-part YouTube series, claiming that Bridget was born in “Jean Michel Trogue.” She also claimed that Macron is a blood parent and Emmanuel Macron is a CIA asset involved in mind control programs like Mkultra.
The lawsuit described these claims as “strange, honorable, distant fiction,” turning the couple into targets of “merciless bullying on a global scale” (quote) CNN).
Macron is willing to testify directly against Candice Owens.
Macron is represented by Tom Claire, the lawyer behind the Dominion vs. Fox news case. He states: “If there was a clear case of honor loss, this is… Owens has invented something new that was designed to promote and expand unreliable falsehood, cause the greatest harm to Macron, and maximize his own attention and economic benefits.”Newsweek))
The couple is reportedly willing to appear directly in Delaware for a potential ju trial.
The lawsuit also alleges that Owens got from a product that promotes the conspiracy.
Owens responds to Macron
On Instagram, Owens posted a photo of Macrons, writing in a news headline about the lawsuit, “I’m coming for this wig today. Stay tuned.” In another post, she captioned a photo with another news headline, “This took the ball.”
An Owens spokesman said CNN She added, “I’m not silent.” “This is a foreign government that attacks the First Amendment rights of American independent journalists. In France, politicians can bully journalists, but this is not France. It is America.”
Owens is expected to respond fully on his podcast soon.
She claims she is a man, not Bridget Macron’s first legal battle.
Bridget Macron previously sued two French women over similar allegations. After the initial victory, the decision was overturned by appeal, and the case is currently pending in the court of Cassation, the French Supreme Court.
Commenting on the rumor earlier this year, President Macron said, “People will believe them, and even your most private moments will disrupt your life.”
Elicie Palace declined to comment and called the incident a private matter.
