Laugarás Lagoon, with Cascading Pools, to Open in Iceland

From the iconic blue lagoon near Reykjavik to its ethereal turquoise waters between black lava fields and the rustic secret lagoon of Furtulle, steam vents and mini-geisers surround the geothermal pool, Iceland is not short of incredible natural and artificial hot springs.

Nordic countries are also famous for their waterfalls. It is estimated that the island nation has a population of over 10,000 people. And for the first time, it combines the features of the geothermal pool and waterfalls at the Lauglass Lagoon, which will open this summer. The central design feature of the new wellness venue is a cascade that is nearly 22 feet wide between the lower and upper pools.

The new lagoon, located on the banks of the Hvita River in Laughlas village, is located within the Golden Circle, over an hour away from the capital, Reykjavik.

The wellness venue, officially opening on August 15th, will feature two-tier hot springs (where water is maintained between 100 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit), two saunas, two swim-up bars, a cold pool, an on-site spa and a variety of lounge areas.

Beyond the Water and Spa features the latest concept of YLJA restaurant’s famous Icelandic chef Gísli Matt. The restaurant uses locally forged ingredients, including Icelandic herbs, various seaweeds, berries, and products sourced from local ranches, fisheries and geothermal greenhouses.

“This is a traditional dish, but it is shaped by modern techniques and many dishes are prepared in open fires,” the company shared in a press release. “Every element focuses on sustainability. Fermentation and preservation minimizes waste while supporting nearby farmers and producers with a circular food system that respects the land.”

The dishes include grilled lamb legs with peppers, pearl barley and hazelnuts, and slow-cooked cod with potato mash, herbal sauce and mustard greens. There is also a grab-and-go section for those looking for snacks and picnic items for shorter times or for a ring road trip.

Laugarás Lagoon offers three packages for visitors, including Birki, which offers unlimited access to the lagoon with 6,900 Icelandic clones (approximately $56.86 USD based on current conversion rates) and its facilities. and ÖSP with perks including two course meals and private changing for 15,900 Icelandic clones (approximately 130.82 USD).

After opening on August 15th, Laughlas Lagoon will be open daily from 10am to 10pm during the summer season (June to September). The winter season (October to May) opens daily from 10am to 9pm, and there is a slightly shorter time. The lagoon welcomes children over the age of 8 and can eat at YLJA restaurants for all ages.

This is the latest addition to a series of new geothermal lagoons announced in Iceland in recent years. In April 2021, Sky Lagoon opened five miles outside Reykjavik, featuring an endless geothermal pool, cold pool, sauna, steam room and part of a seven-stage bathing “ritual”. In May 2022, Forestragoon opened in a white ch and pine tree grove in Acureili, north of Iceland, with views of two pools, a dry Finnish sauna and Ejjafjor ður fjord.
