Why did the Royals summon Jack Carrianon?
The Royals are turning their eyes to top prospects to jumpstart one of the league’s coldest attacks. After a 1-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, the Royals announced they are calling out their first round pick in 2024 and current No. 10 prospect Jac Caglianone in baseball.
Despite holding a respectable 31-29 record, Kansas City ranks near the bottom of the MLB in RUN production. Throughout 60 games, the Royals manage only 194 runs, with the historically bad Colorado Rockies not scoring.
Who is Jac Caglianone?
Caglianone, 21, is already the common name for college baseball fans. The former Florida Gators standout has broken the program’s single-season home run record and emerged as one of the nation’s most feared bats. He was selected as the sixth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft and wasted no time affecting the Royals’ minor league system.
Crossing Double-A and Triple-A, the Caglianone hit .323 with 15 home runs, 56 RBI and .991 OPS in just 49 games. Although they have only spent 12 games in Triple A, Kansas City is quickly tracking sluggers into the majors in hopes that they can soon become the maker of the difference.
What position will Jac Caglianone play for the Royals?
Cagliannon starred as a two-way college player, pitching for a base, but he is currently transitioning to the outfield to the corner. This move is still an ongoing task and some defensive growth pain is expected. But the outfield situation in Kansas City is desperate enough to make his bats more than risky.
The team recently designated Hunter Renflo assigning after hitting just .180 with the .483 OPS. Drew Waters was the most productive Royals outfielder this season, but still holds a modest .703 OPS.

Will Caglianone win Rookie of the Year?
Yes, there’s still time. Despite making his debut in June, Caglianone continues to qualify for the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He will face tough competition, especially from Auckland track and field Jacob Wilson, but a hot stretch could potentially get him into the conversation.
And if the Royals can stay in the postseason hunt – they’re just two games, the second game at AL Central – Kalianone’s contribution could be even more valuable.
How good is the Royals pitching in 2025?
While attacks are surged, Kansas City pitching staff is one of MLB’s most enjoyable surprises. Strong starting pitching and consistent bullpen keep the team within impressive distance with playoff spot competition.
The Royals made the postseason in 2024 and passed the Baltimore Orioles in a wild card round before falling for the New York Yankees. Having the pitching intact and adding a legal bat like Carryanon could be a spark to rekindle another playoff run.
