Kabuki drama ‘Kokuho’ hits Japan box office landmark

Kokuho, a three-hour Japanese epic about the family of a performer of a kaza-dance performer, premiered at Cannes, surpasses the 5 billion yen ($34 million) mark at the Japanese box office.

The drama, directed by Lee Sang-Il, recorded a landmark on June 10th, marking 3.57 million visitors, according to distributor Toho. This is Japan’s best-selling live-action domestic film of 2025 so far.

Released on June 6th, the film achieved the unusual feat of increasing its own take every weekend since it opened.

The last feature that surpassed myself on the fourth consecutive weekend in Japan was 2018 bohemian rhapsody and Hello It is the first film distributed by Toho to achieve this since the company began reporting box office revenue in 2000.

On the fifth weekend (July 4-6), the film ranked at the top of the box office, winning $4.4 million (¥646 million) from 440,000 entry. This represents a 105.9% increase over the previous weekend (June 27-29), when the film won $4.15 million (June 600 million). The opening way (June 6-8) brought $2.36 million (346 million yen) from 245,000 admissions.

Hello Chieko of producer Murata said screen That strong word of mouth has played a major role in the film’s continued success.

“A young audience who had never seen Kabuki and had no interest in Kabuki, decided to go and watch the movie for word of mouth and good reviews,” she said.

“I know Cannes films tend to be difficult to achieve commercial box office revenue, but Hello With a good balance of quality and entertainment, we are excited that the film is being accepted by a wide audience. ”

Produced by Aniplex Inc. Hello (“National Treasure”) centers around the son of a yakuza boss played by Yoshizawa, who was taken under the wings of a famous Watanabe actor after his father’s death. The young man, along with his biological son, played by the veteran actor, China, devotes his life to the art of singing and dancing, a classic form of Japanese theatre known for his costumes and elaborate makeup.
