Earlier this month, Jackie Shroff moved the Delhi High Court in a bid to protect his personal rights by stopping entities from unauthorized apply of the ‘Bhidu’ actor’s name, voice, photos and signature. Following this, on May 15, the Delhi High Court issued an order protecting Jackie’s personality and publicity rights. According to Bar and Bench, Justice Sanjeev Narula also ordered the removal of several pornographic links that used the actor’s name.
Now, the actor has come forward and reacted to the quick action taken by the Delhi High Court and has issued a statement. In his statement to the press, the veteran actor said: “I am extremely grateful to the justice system for issuing an order protecting my personal rights, including my name, image, likeness, voice and other unique characteristics. For a long time, stars had no way out of misusing their image. However, I am heartened by the fact that the courts are gradually recognizing and protecting these rights, as demonstrated in the landmark cases involving Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor. These precedents have greatly encouraged me and motivated me to pursue my rights.”
Further emphasizing the importance of calling attention to the unauthorized apply and misuse of an actor’s attributes in an era of evolving technology, he added: “Celebrities wield significant influence, and such misuse can mislead the public about a celebrity’s affiliation with particular goods or services. The inappropriate apply of celebrity images not only dilutes our brand value, but also misleads the general public.”
Further speaking on the need to protect celebrities’ personal rights, he said: “This protection extends to all forms of media, including digital platforms, and specifically prohibits the apply of artificial intelligence, deep fakes, GIFs, AI chatbots and similar technologies.” to apply my person without my express consent.”
Before Jackie, few other Bollywood stars had their personal rights legally protected. In 2022, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order prohibiting persons from violating the personal rights and image rights of legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan.
In addition to Jackie and Gigantic B., Anil Kapoor also approached the Delhi High Court last year to protect his personal rights. Earlier this year, in January, Anil won a case protecting against unauthorized apply of the slogan ‘Jhakaas’, his name, voice, manner of speaking, image, likeness and gestures.
