Ireland puts streamer levy plans on hold

The Irish government amended the law today (April 10) to carry out the proposed content production collection in US streamers.Ncluding Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney+ Conditions for approval by the Minister.

Irish media regulator Coimisiún Na Meán has been permitted to introduce a draft collection law for broadcasters and video-on-demand providers to fund a scheme that will promote Ireland’s production under the country’s online safety and media regulation law 2022.

However, Irish Minister of Arts, Media, Communication, Culture and Sports Patrick O’Donovan said he had no intention of allowing collection “until we are satisfied that such collection does not impose an undue burden on us.”

The Irish pullback from Streaming Levy comes as a committee of British Parliament issued its recommendation to the UK government today. In search of 5% streamer collection, As part of the findings of a survey into British films and high-end television.

France, Portugal, Croatia, Germany, Romania, Poland, Denmark and the Czech Republic all have implemented streamer taxation.

The revised general scheme of Ireland’s revised broadcast (amendment) bill also includes changes to the bill aimed at increasing money and transparency for Ireland’s public broadcasters RTé and TG4.

RTé is required by law to spend at least 25% of the public funds on content commissioned by the independent production sector, as Coimisiún Na Meán is permitted to increase this percentage by ministerial agreement.
