Led by Jonny Bairstow’s stunning hundred, Punjab Kings set a up-to-date world record for the highest run chase in the history of T20 cricket, beating the 262-run target set by Kolkata Knight Riders with eight wickets to spare in their IPL 2024 match at Eden Gardens on Friday. In March last year, PBKS improved to 259/4 against the West Indies from South Africa. In the IPL, Rajasthan Royals set the previous record by beating KKR’s 224 at Eden Gardens recently, equaling the record set against the then Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2020 in Sharjah.
With the victory, Punjab Kings gained a place in the points table and moved up to 8th place with three wins in nine matches. Meanwhile, the promotion of PBKS meant that the Mumbai Indians dropped to ninth position with 6 points after playing eight matches. The rest of the scoring table remained unchanged.
Here is the updated IPL 2024 points table:
While Virat Kohli continues to lead the scorer’s chart with 430 runs from 9 matches and holds the Orange Cap, Harshal Patel has overtaken Jasprit Bumrah on the wicket-taker’s chart with 14 scalps to win the Purple Cap.
Kolkata Knight Riders, sent in to attack, scored 261/6 but PBKS ended the chase with eight balls to spare.
KKR were contested in a 138-run stand between openers Phil Salt (75 off 37 balls) and Sunil Narin (71 off 32 balls).
The batsmen who followed the openers then strengthened the hosts’ position and took them to an impressive total.
In reply, PBKS also had a great start and scored 93 runs after losing the wicket of Prabhsimran Singh in the power play.
Prabhsimran soared to a 20-ball 54 before being run out. Bairstow continued his brutal attack to facilitate PBKS achieve a stunning victory. Bairstow (108 off 48 balls) was well supported by Shashank Singh, who scored 68 in just 28 balls.
