The CEOs of OpenAI, Microsoft and Google are among the high-profile members of a recent federal board created to advise the U.S. government on “safe and sound” AI development.
The recent advisory council will facilitate authorities combat AI-related disruptions that could “impact national or economic security, public health, or safety,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement Friday.
President Joe Biden has directed the department’s Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, to create a 22-member board.
Mayorkas said that while artificial intelligence is a transformative tool, it “poses real risks.”
“The board will facilitate DHS stay ahead of evolving threats posed by adversarial nation-state actors and strengthen our national security,” the statement said.
Artificial intelligence could be used by hostile forces to enable faster, larger-scale attacks on targets such as pipelines, railways and other critical infrastructure, he said.

“Artificial intelligence is the most transformative technology of our time, and we must ensure it is deployed safely and responsibly,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement.
Other influential members appointed to the board include the CEOs of Adobe, Alphabet, Advanced Micro Devices, Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, Delta Airlines and Northrop Grumman.
Scientists and politicians, including the governor of Maryland, also serve on the board.
The board is scheduled to meet for the first time in early May and make recommendations for the safe and sound adoption of artificial intelligence “in the vital services that Americans depend on every day,” he said.
