NEW DELHI: Following Chennai Super Kings’ 27-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that they could not cross the line at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Gaikwad himself had a disappointing outing as he was dismissed for a golden duck on the first ball of the second over by Glenn Maxwell.
In his post-match speech, Gaikwad admitted that the Bengaluru wicket was favorable, providing good turn and grip to the spinners.
He noted that the team encountered numerous challenges in the game, including: the absence of key players Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman.
Gaikwad expressed disappointment that he failed to secure a berth in the IPL 2024 play-offs.
“It was a good wicket. For spinners it turned and held a bit. I was quite content with what the goal was. To sum up the season, I’m quite content with seven games out of 14. Injuries, not having Conway made a huge difference. He was injured from the very first match and we also missed Fizz. When you have injuries, it’s hard to balance the squad, but things like that can happen. For me, personal achievements do not matter much. After all, the ultimate reward is victory. We couldn’t get it, so personally I’m a bit disappointed too, he said.
Before the match, CSK won the toss and chose to bat first. RCB posted a good score of 218/5 on the board with skipper Faf Du Plessis (54 in 39 balls, three fours and three sixes), Virat Kohli (47 in 29 balls, three fours and four sixes) a 78-run partnership to secure a good platform for Rajat Patidar (41 in 23 balls, two fours and four sixes) and Cameron Green (38* in 17 balls, three fours and three sixes) to play 71 runs for the third wicket.
The performances of Dinesh Karthik (14 in six balls, a four and a six) and Glenn Maxwell (16 in five balls, two fours and a six) took RCB to a total of over 200 runs.
RCB had to restrict CSK to under 201 runs to qualify for the playoffs and exceed their net run rate.
Chasing 219 runs and the task of scoring 201 runs at least to book the top four, CSK lost two wickets early and were reduced to 19/2. Rachin Ravindra (61 in 37 balls, five fours and three sixes) and Ajinkya Rahane (33 in 22 balls, three fours and a six) provided 66 runs to get the team into the game.
RCB reduced CSK to 129/6 but the partnership in between Ravindra Jadeja (42* in 22 balls, three fours and three sixes) and MS Dhoni (25* in 13 balls, three fours and a six) threatened to take the match away from RCB. However, Yash Dayal saved 11 runs in the last over to restrict CSK to just 191/7 in 20 overs.
RCB is in fourth place with seven wins and seven losses and 14 points. CSK is in fifth place with seven wins and seven losses, but has dropped to fifth place due to lower net profitability ratio.
