It’s that time of year again: Google is preparing for I/O, its annual software event. Like Apple’s WWDC, Google I/O is actually a developer conference rather than a time-honored product announcement. But while app developers may keep track of specialized events themselves, the rest of us are really here to learn about consumer-facing software news. In the case of Google I/O this means: a plot artificial intelligence.
Google I/O and artificial intelligence
Google has been promoting its AI services for some time now. Once called Bard, Gemini is almost everywhere Google is: a paid version of the service is now available, as is ChatGPT Plus, and the technology now powers many of Google’s AI features across Android, Workspace, Maps, and more.
Artificial intelligence is the current trend in technology and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Expect Google to continue the conversation as it discusses its vision for artificial intelligence in its product lineup, particularly as it relates to search. (Search is still the company’s bread and butter, of course.)
Of course, as I/O, Google will likely utilize this event as an opportunity to showcase Android 15, which is currently in beta. Perhaps the company will expand on features we already know about, such as granular control over the number of notifications an app can send, a high-quality webcam mode, and partial screen sharing, among others. It’s also possible that Google will add fresh features that haven’t been beta tested yet, as well as other fresh features.
While it’s possible that the company will announce hardware, the real focus is on software. That said, the company will undoubtedly take note of the recent launch of the Pixel 8a.
How to watch Google I/O 2024
Even if you’re not one of the journalists and developers invited to I/O in person, you can join in wherever you are. Google will be live streaming the event from its official website as well as from company YouTube channel. The main event begins on Tuesday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. PT (1:00 p.m. EST).
