Google is pushing Gemini quite strenuous right now, and one of the ways it’s doing that is by integrating AI into your smartphone. On Android phones, you can actually set Gemini as a Google Assistant replacement, allowing you to directly access the chatbot by simply saying, “Hey Google.” Unfortunately, using Gemini as an assistant replacement comes with a few caveats.
How to exploit Gemini as a Google Assistant replacement
It looks like Google is already working on replacing Gemini Assistant, so it’s worth getting used to things before they change for good. To exploit Gemini as a Google Assistant replacement, simply download the Gemini app and log in. You will then be asked if you want to exploit Gemini instead of Assistant. Select the confirmation option and it should automatically set everything up for you.
If you somehow skipped this part or want to do it manually, you can change the default assistant app at any time by going to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Digital Assistant App. Just change it to Gemini and you’re done. Alternatively, if you don’t want to exploit Gemini as an Assistant replacement, just follow the same steps and select the Google app as your default assistant app.
What features does Gemini offer?
The most critical reason you might want to exploit Gemini is that it offers a much stronger artificial intelligence system than Google Assistant. This means you can ask it to generate images, messages and emails directly via the home button or by saying “Hey Google”.
Once Gemini is set up as a Google Assistant, you’ll have access to all the features Gemini already offers in your browser, but directly through your phone. This can be useful, but as I mentioned above, it has some drawbacks.
Most importantly, Gemini is currently not fully developed in terms of interacting with other applications. This makes it tough to set alarms and other things in Gemini because it doesn’t have the systems necessary to do it all. This will likely change in the future, especially as Google insists that Gemini will completely replace Google Assistant. However, it is worth being aware of this for now.
