Google and Microsoft are among the many tech giants that have set their sights on India for AI development. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly critical, these companies see India as a key player in shaping the future of the technology. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), recently highlighted India’s potential, stating that it is “well-positioned” to influence global AI development.
During a roundtable at Google’s annual conference, Google I/O 2024, Pichai said that for India and other emerging countries, technological change offers an opportunity to catch up or take a step forward.
“A great example in India. India was never going to surpass the developed world in terms of PC penetration. However, with mobile devices, more people have gained access than in previous generations. People didn’t have landlines, but most people have cellphones,” Google’s CEO told Mint.
India is the No. 1 country in terms of user base for AI tools, says Pichai
Talking further about the AI adoption rate in India, Pichai reportedly said: “AI tools… for many of our products, India is the number one country in terms of user base. We want to make the same artificial intelligence tools available. We are seeing a lot of activity around existing AI tools. An exhilarating moment. India will be in a good position when the transition to artificial intelligence takes place.”
During his keynote, Pichai said the company has long been at the forefront of its approach to artificial intelligence. “Our decades of research leadership have sparked many contemporary breakthroughs that are driving AI advancements, for us and for the industry,” he said.
He said the company has world-leading infrastructure built for the AI era, search innovation powered by Gemini, products that aid scale — including 15 products with half a billion users, and platforms that enable partners, customers, creators to invent the future.
