Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tiplas resigned from his parliamentary seat, promoting speculation that he would form a new political party.

In his announcement Monday, Tsipras said he has resigned as a member of Parliament in Syria but will not “resign from political activity.”

“I cannot formally participate in a Congress that stripped me of democratically deleted nakedness, mainly due to the majority responsibility, and I don’t want to.

The left told his former colleague later Monday:

His remarks come amid the rise in rumors in the Greek media that Tsipras will launch a new party with the aim of leading the country’s central left and leaving.

Tsipras became Siliza’s leader in 2008 at the age of 34. He served as Greek prime minister from 2015 to 2019 in a politically tumultuous year as the country was struggling to end a series of international bailouts.

In June 2023, he resigned as Siliza’s leader after the party was overwhelmingly defeated by the New Democrats right in the ruling centre in the general election. Siliza was subsequently broken and taken away by the socialist Pasok party as the main opposition in Greece.

The new democracy still looks comfortable in the polls, but despite recent decline in popularity, Tsipras could challenge Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis if he forms a new party.

Polls show that ahead of the next election in 2027, local media reports show that Tsipras’ potential foundation could account for up to 20% of Greek voters.

The seats in the parliament, vacant by Tsipras, will be filled by former Navy Minister Thodoris Dritsas, who represented Siliza but is now affiliated with the new left.

This would give the new left a total of 12 MPs, leaving Siliza with 25 remaining, local media reported.
