In the Everglades in Florida, state-level lawmakers and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have decided to build a new detention center for immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) housing for arrested illegal immigrants awaiting disposal and deportation.
Using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds, the facility is expected to accommodate up to 1,000 people, touted in President Donald Trump’s policy of cracking down on illegal immigration as the latest example of Florida’s dedication under Gov. Ron DeSantis.
