Privacy-focused browser DuckDuckGo now allows its users to anonymously interact with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots such as GPT 3.5 Turbo by Open AI, Claude 3 Haiku by Anthropic, Meta Llama 3 and Mixtral 8x7B by Mistral. The fresh feature is called AI Chat and is “free in one day.”
You can also disable DuckDuckGo AI chat if necessary. The company says it plans to add more chat models and entry points to the browser.
“We see AI Chat and Search as two different but powerful tools to assist you find what you’re looking for – especially when you’re exploring a fresh topic,” the company said in a blog post.
How does DuckDuckGo AI chat work?
The company claims that users will be able to choose any chat model. It currently supports OpenAI GPT 3.5 Turbo, the latest generation Anthropic Claude 3 Haiku, Mixtral 8x7B and Meta Llama 3.
Once they choose a chat model, they can start using it just like any other chat interface. “Like searches on DuckDuckGo, all chats are completely anonymous: they cannot be associated with any individual,” the company says.
In a blog post, the company explains that access to chat models is done using an IP address, not the user’s IP address. “This way it looks like the requests are coming from us and not you.”
Additionally, DuckDuckGo does not save or store any chats. However, it may temporarily store chats to respond and ensure all systems are working, the company says.
“…but they have no way to link chats to you personally because all metadata is removed,” he adds.
Paid option coming soon
DuckDuckGo AI Chat is free to apply with a daily limit. However, the company says it is “considering a paid plan that provides access to higher limits and more advanced (and exorbitant) chat models.”
