DP World, a global logistics company, has spent around 45% of its planned capital expenditure of ₹ 1,700 crore on setting up, developing and operating free trade warehousing zones (FTWZs) in Chennai, Mumbai and Kochi.
“The Chennai Economic Zone was commissioned in October 2023.” – said Ranjit Ray, DP World vice president for economic zones in the subcontinent. “The Nhava Sheva economic zone in Mumbai will be operational from 2022 and the Kochi zone will become operational soon,” he added.
“We used 40-45% of the capital expenditure. The balance will be distributed based on demand,” he said.
The 6,00,000 sq ft Chennai SEZ comprises four warehouses and will focus on Asian and African markets and cater to the industrial engineering, FMCG, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors.
The warehousing zone in Chennai will offer a range of value-added services such as labeling, packaging, primary manufacturing and re-export facilitation, Ray said, adding that he is hopeful that Chennai FTWZ will break even in FY2025.
of the three FTWZs, Chennai is the largest with an area of 125 acres, followed by Mumbai and Kochi with an area of 85 and 10 acres respectively.
The Nhava Sheva Economic Zone is spread over an area of 10 lakh square feet and will be doubled, while the Kochi Economic Zone is spread over 70,000 square feet with plans to add 1.30 lakh square feet.
