Disaster management body ISRO is set to utilize artificial intelligence for better forecasting

Patna: Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Monday agreed to work together to forecast natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, lightning, chilly wave and heat wave in the state. “ISRO Space Applications Center Director Nilesh M. Desai and his team, who visited BSDMA on Monday on the first anniversary of Bihar Mausam Seva Kendra, expressed their willingness to collaborate with BSDMA in the areas of disaster management, mitigation and forecasting. BSDMA Vice-Chairman Uday Kant has agreed to cooperate,” reads a statement issued by BSDMA. The release said ISRO will analyze the nature of Bihar’s rivers and forecasts of floods and other natural disasters using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and established Indian knowledge system. “Flood damage can be mitigated in the state by using satellite data received from ISRO to know the depth of rivers and assess the results for developing disaster management policy,” the release added.
