China announced a series of new weapons at the Victory Day military parade on Wednesday, celebrating the anniversary of Japan’s surrender each year to end World War II.
This year’s parade was an opportunity for Beijing to demonstrate its strength by celebrating its 80th anniversary and portray itself as a global alternative to the US-controlled postwar era.
The new YJ-15 hyper missile was first on display during the parade. YJ – or Ying Ji (Eagle Attack) – A rocket line can be fired from a ship or aircraft and is designed to stab large containers, causing great damage to the impact.
Beijing has also revealed a new special large unmanned undersea vehicle (XLUUV) with flagship AJX002. The sea drone is just over 18 meters long and is designed to operate stealth. It will be added to China’s already well-developed Xluuvs fleet, featuring at least five different types of systems, further consolidating China’s domination in the sea drone space.
The Chinese military also introduced three new types of nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles: Dong Feng 61, Dong Feng-31BJ and Dong Feng-5C. Beijing’s new JL-1 system complements these new systems, the country’s first aerial nuclear missile.
According to Chinese media, the flagship DF-5C is over 20,000 km, putting the entire world in Beijing’s strike range. The DF-5C is reportedly capable of carrying up to 12 warheads with a single missile.
The parade also marked the debut of China’s first space defense system, the HQ-29. Missiles can defeat foreign satellites with one blow, further highlighting the country’s aviation control.
Speaking before the parade, Chinese President Xi Jinping said today’s humanity must choose between peace and war, and between dialogue and conflict.
Chinese leaders acknowledged the victims and lamented the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. He also called for the extermination of the roots of war to prevent history from repeating itself.
President XI was joined by two guests at a parade of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Shortly after the parade began, President Donald Trump took the opportunity to bring social truth to share his views.
“The big question to be answered is whether China’s President XI will refer to the vast amount of support and ‘blood’ that the United States has given to China to help ensure freedom from foreign invaders that are not very friendly,” Trump asked.
“Many Americans have died in China’s quest for victory and glory. I hope they are justly respected and remembered for their courage and sacrifice!”
In his speech, Xi did not mention the United States by name, but expressed his gratitude to the foreign countries for helping to resist Japan’s invasion during World War II.
“President XI and the amazing people of China are having a wonderful day of great celebration. Please give me my warm respect as you are conspiring with Vladimir Putin,” Trump said at the end of his post.
In the country, anniversary commemorations are a way to show how far Beijing has come.
China is a key front of World War II, a fact that is often overlooked in accounts that focus more on European and US naval combat battles in the Pacific Ocean. Japan’s invasion and conflict itself before World War II killed millions of Chinese people.
