Can Doctors Prescribe Travel? – AFAR

In Sweden, new types of prescriptions come with side effects such as “a sudden appreciation for pine trees” and “a desire for meatball dinners and reading them like the 1800s.” These tongue warnings will be viewed through visits to Sweden’s latest ad campaign launched this week. This spotlighted the research initiative that encouraged doctors around the world to prescribe travel to the country.

Reviewed by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, a medical university, the program suggests certain Swedish experiences that could lead to health benefits such as forest bathing and forest bathing to blood pressure, cold conditions to increase circulation and energy, sleeping under the stars, and dancing at summer music festivals at summer music festivals. The campaign and its proposed activities aim to serve as a support tool to promote happiness, especially in cases of stress, fatigue, mild anxiety and other low-level symptoms, with each visit to Swedish prescription website.

“A visit to Sweden is like a natural health remedy,” Susan Anderson, CEO of the Visiting Sweden, said in a press release announcing the program. “Our coffee Tradition, us just, (or) a balanced lifestyle, and our easily accessible nature, are soothing perfumes for the body and mind. ”

The campaign’s video suggests, “If you find yourself developing a preference for herring and minimalism, talk to your travel agent immediately,” but the program is more than just a marketing gimmick. Research shows that spending time in nature and participating in cultural activities can support both mental and physical health.

“Given the multifaceted benefits of physical and mental health and well-being, given the contact with nature, we hope that more medical professionals advocate for spending time in nature,” said Dr Manoj Sharma, professor of social and behavioral health at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

Dr. Marcus Coplin, a naturopathic doctor and medical director of Springs Resort and Murietta Hot Springs Resort, repeats the sentiment.

Dr. Koplin added that for centuries, people have sought the healing benefits of the surrounding natural resources and the environment. Mineral-rich hot springs in the United States and Japan have long been touted for their ability to cure everything from arthritis to skin conditions. Similarly, at 1,400 feet above sea level, hypersensitivity water from the Dead Sea is often recommended for skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema.

North American Travel Prescription Program

Sweden may be the first to link prescriptions to a national travel campaign, but the idea of doctors to prescribe time outdoors and in social settings has recently attracted attention among organizations seeking to promote the concept as a real-life remedy for modern health challenges.

A handful of other programs reveal what this actually looks like:

  • Park RX America: The program trains doctors and nurses to prescribe time in local parks, encouraging patients to walk outdoors for 30 minutes several times a week. Studies have shown that even a slight increase in outer time can lower cortisol levels and support cardiovascular health.
  • Social Prescriptions America: A personal care model in which healthcare providers tackle loneliness by writing referrals for group activities rather than medication – joining a walking club, attending community dinners, or volunteering. The goal is to improve mental health and build a social support network.
  • Nature Connection Guide We provide doctors with a curated menu of outdoor activities tailored to specific health outcomes. For example, gardening is associated with mobility and mood improvement, while birdwatching can promote mindfulness and reduce anxiety.
  • In Massachusetts Large Cultural CouncilThe independent State Arts Agency experiments with cultural prescriptions and distributes passes to museums, concerts and performances. The idea is that art and cultural connections are not luxury, but essentials that can improve happiness and combat isolation.
  • Parks Canada has been developed Parxa program that allows doctors to prescribe free annual adult Parks Canada discovery paths to patients who may benefit from nature.

Together, these initiatives emphasize changes in thinking. Medical care does not always occur in hospitals or pharmacies. It can also happen on hiking trails, galleries, or shared cups of coffee. For advocates, the gap underscores the need to normalize these mainstream healthcare tools.

“The beauty of this practice is that it’s part of the adventure, part of the healthcare,” says Dr. Coplin. “By taking time to remove ourselves from our daily grinding locations, moving to unique locations and immersing ourselves in the specific rhythms that the location offers, our bodies and minds can find new paces, letting go of accumulated stressors and strengthening the resilience of our body’s natural healing mechanisms.”

Considering that Sweden is consistently ranked in the top five on the global Happy Country list (this year ranks fourth on both the World Population Review and the Institute for Happy Life Research, offering a wild Arctic landscape, whether it deserves design forward cities, island-studded coastlines and overlights often covered or not.
